If you haven't been back in a while — this is not the same St. Louis where you grew up.  Vast improvements have occured at Forest Park, the Gateway Arch and Missouri Botanical Garden as well as a number of other cultural venues — e.g. the (still free) St. Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Science Center, the Art Museum, and the list goes on.  

The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission (dba Explore St. Louis) publishes an annual Explore St. Louis brochure providing the latest and greatest about what's going on in "The Lou".  Click on the link below to view the 2019 version.  

There are many excellent articles to enjoy — but definitely take a gander at "The Reimagined Gateway Arch" starting on page 21.  Of particular interest is that I-44 (which you may remember inconveniently separated the Arch grounds from the rest of downtown) is a problem no more as a result of a genius landscaping project.
